I think there is more money to be made from a single "Take me to a registered dealer" light - than actually telling you what the fault is. Already this is creeping in with the diagnotstic equipment or software only being available to main dealers at a prohibitive cost price of £1000's.
I would feel like driving my car straight into the showroom and saying - now I know what's wrong with it too !
Hopefully this will spur a new generation of aftermarket ECU's - that have their own LCD readout on top![]()
"If we do happen to step on a mine, Sir, what do we do ?"
"Normal procedure, Lieutenant, is to jump 200 feet in the air and scatter oneself over a wide area." ...Blackadder.
I used to refuse to drive half of our fleet cars because of poor maintenance.. brake warning lights, bald tyres, engines that cut power at 3000rpm etc etc. Not so much of a problem these days, new management and such. Although I did take one out the other day that had just been checked to find the intercooler pipe was split and the car was gobbing out huge plumes of smoke as a result.
Refused to drive that also!

i think the electronics thing does in the long run make for a longer lasting engine...my bmw has all the usual gauges and then the eml and various other lights on top...i religousley read my gauges on all cars i drive as i feel its common sense to do so and will give an early warning to most probs...i brought a code reader for the beemer as i do most my own jobs, and i have also got one for the sprinter which i also use on the citroen..invaluable as like everyone says on here the main stealers shaft you....i find they can assist with locating the faults most of the time, and as long as the sensors are not buried in the middle of the engine and can be changed moderately easily i think they are a good thing..i think they have a blue tooth connector plug out now that will connect to obd 1 and 2 and give a read out on your mobile phone..just need prices to come down a bit cheaper, and an idiots guide producing plus the main stealers made to use open code software so anybody can get chatting to their motor...
